Isatou Baldeh

Gambia & University of Cape Town, 2024

Isatou Baldeh holds a Bachelors Degree in Journalism from the School of Journalism and Digital Media, University of the Gambia. She has a deep passion and commitment for mental health advocacy. This motivated her to write her undergraduate dissertation on “myths and health issues of mental disorders in The Gambia”. Isatou volunteered as a student mentor with Starfish International, a non-profit organisation that empowers Gambian girls through quality and affordable education.

Isatou is a women and girls' rights activist and has impacted the lives of thousands of women and girls in her community through her advocacy work. She is proud to be part of the movement that is working towards gender equality and creating a more inclusive society. The most rewarding part of her service-oriented leadership journey is seeing the transformation and the impact she has made in the past few years.

She is currently the Programs Director of Girls Talk, a non-profit organisation that fights for the rights of women and girls. As the Programs Director, she has been involved in various projects and initiatives including advocating for girls’ education, promoting women’s health and well-being and creating awareness about issues affecting them. As a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, she plans to study Women and Gender Studies at the University of the Western Cape. Isatou is a social butterfly and gets along with people pretty well.
