Mark John Burke (South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2012) is a member of the National Assembly of South Africa. With a PhD in econometrics and quantitative economics from Cambridge University in the UK, he sits on the Standing Committee on Appropriations and Standing Committee on Finance. Lehlohonolo Mofokeng (South Africa & University of the Witwatersrand, 2015) was recently recognised as a 2024 Sunday World Unsung Hero. An accounting teacher, Lehlohonolo is committed to turning township schools into world-class centres of learning. Read more at https://shorturl.at/7m45k
Curwyn Mapaling (South Africa & Stellenbosch University, 2015) has been named one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans of 2024. A senior lecturer and clinical psychologist at the University of Johannesburg, Curwyn integrates psychological principles into higher education and beyond to promote well-being in the Global South. Zolani Metu (South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2017), a licensed social worker, is being honoured as a News24 Young Mandela in the Mental Health category. Zolani is dedicated to offering affordable clinical care to marginalised groups, including LGBTQIA+ individuals, black graduates, and students from underprivileged schools. Francisca Darkoh (South Africa & Stellenbosch University, 2024) an MSc in Physiological Sciences student, is tackling one of the Sustainable Development Goals #ZeroHunger by assisting students with meals during tough periods of the year.
