Colin Besaans
South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2016 My work and research is focused on achieving a fair and equitable fossil fuel phase out. I'm currently reading for the Masters of Public Policy at Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government on a Rhodes Scholarship. I join the MPP having just graduated from the MSc in Environmental Change and Management (merit) at Oxford's Environmental Change Institute. I'm interested in climate justice, renewable energy transition, climate change communication, climate negotiations, and the intersection between environmental change adaptation, mitigation, and development. Prior to Oxford I spent two years at McKinsey & Company, based in both the Johannesburg and Doha offices. I worked across a range of industries and functions but was, primarily focused on strategy and organizational change projects. Prior to McKinsey I held the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship (2016) while pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics (distinction) and Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT). I have a decade of experience in competitive debating, representing my country and university at the World Schools and World Universities Debating Championship respectively. I'm passionate about teaching the skills of critical engagement and problem solving to young people through the medium of debate and have served as the National Chief Adjudicator on the South African Schools Debating Board and the Deputy Director of the Thethani Debating League (NPO).
