Hannah Stevens
South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2024 Hannah Stevens graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in English, Psychology and Sociology. Hannah’s interests lie predominantly in the fields of Psychology and English literature – specifically in Neuropsychology as well as African and queer fiction. She is interested in expanding the application of Psychology in Africa and in moving the field away from being a tool serving middle- and upper-class communities. As someone who lives with chronic health impairments, Hannah is familiar with the debilitating consequences of under-researched fields and under-trained healthcare professionals. She aspires to use her education to advance the field of Psychology, spur research, inform policy, increase access to adequate healthcare and improve treatment programs. Hannah is passionate about creative writing and social justice. She has served two years in an elected leadership position on the executive committee for Amnesty International UCT. Through her work with Amnesty, she has been awarded with the UCT Plus Silver Leadership award. Hannah is particularly interested in using writing as a tool to foster healing. Her writing was recently recognised with the Thelma Tyfield Prize for the best undergraduate essay at UCT in 2022 for her piece of autofiction on intergenerational trauma and reconnection. In her free time, Hannah can be found reading a good book, knitting socks or enjoying the outdoors.
