Mercy Awino

Uganda & University of Pretoria, 2025

Mercy completed her law degree from Makerere University in Uganda where she studied on a National Merit scholarship from the Ugandan government.

She was also awarded the DLA Piper Global Scholarship in 2020 for her academic excellence and leadership. Through the scholarship, Mercy attended a Leadership Program at Said Business School, Oxford University.

Mercy is passionate about human rights, democratic governance, and policy advocacy.

She did an eight-month internship at the International Service for Human Rights in Geneva, where she supported advocacy efforts of human rights defenders in the MENA region at the Human Rights Council.

As an ardent debater who has debated at national and regional tournaments like the East African Universities Debate Championships, Mercy hopes to harness debate and public speaking as a tool for social advocacy.

Mercy co-founded the Elle Parle Women’s Open, an organisation where young women are trained in debate, public speaking and leadership skills to prepare them to take up social and political leadership.

Mercy is pursuing a master's in international law and hopes that this hones her skill and professional network to contribute to human rights advocacy at regional and international level.
