Nosipho Gumede
South Africa & University of the Witwatersrand, 2019 Nosipho Gumede (Pr. Eng) grew up just outside of Durban and moved to Johannesburg in 2010 to realise her dreams of becoming an Extractive Metallurgical Engineer. She obtained a BSc in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013. She did this whilst co-founding the Poetry Society at Wits, winning a National Poetry Competition (hosted by Wits Drama For Life) and making it to the Dean’s List. Following that, she started working as a Graduate Metallurgist at Anglo American Thermal Coal in 2014. She completed a graduate training programme that required her to first solve problems at the lowest level as an operator. After completing this programme, she was appointed as a Senior Plant Metallurgist. In 2019, after 5 years in mining, she left the industry to complete her MSc as a full-time student and a Mandela Rhodes Scholar. She completed her research in a novel Business Improvement methodology called Lean and Value Engineering Hybrid Methodology. Nosipho believes that the engineering problem-solving approach can and should be applied in sectors such as health and education for the betterment of society. This belief resulted in her using her skills to improve processes in mining Primary Healthcare centres. Additionally, she has applied her engineering skills in areas such as Telemedicine, Electronic Scripting and Healthcare Professional Recruitment/Onboarding. Her current Healthcare projects involve the application of Virtual Healthcare to overcome covid-19 challenges. She is a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa and is currently providing business improvement consulting services in the mining industry.
