Ramses Peigou Wonkam

Cameroon & University of Cape Town, 2025

Ramses is a dual-degree candidate at the University of Cape Town, with a medical degree (MBChB) concurrently with a Master of Medical Science in Bioinformatics.

Born in Switzerland to Cameroonian heritage and raised in South Africa, Ramses embodies a multicultural perspective driven by a pan-African identity committed to advancing healthcare across Africa.

As a medical student admitted to UCT’s nation-unique intercalated programme, Ramses earned a first-class Honours degree in Medical Science specialising in Human Genetics, graduating top of his class.

Ramses was a President of SHAWCO Health, the largest student-led NPO on the continent, he led initiatives providing free primary healthcare to over 1,100 underserved patients annually, contributing to the global goal of “health for all.”

He also served as Head of Research for the UCT Surgical Society, Africa’s oldest student-led surgical society, where he fostered research opportunities for undergraduate health sciences students.

He started the “Surgical Soul Podcast”, exploring the narratives and experiences of healthcare experts.

His ambition is to become an academic clinician-scientist is anchored in the belief that through education, healthcare, and scientific innovation, Africa can ascend to unprecedented heights.
