Sinikiwe Mqadi
South Africa & University of the Witwatersrand, 2015 Given her journalism background, Sinikiwe, has written various articles highlighting the injustices that many communities battle. Her articles covered the topics including the scourge of rape culture, role of women in the Fees Must Fall movement, and nutritional challenges in under-5 children. Sinikiwe is passionate about evidence-based community interventions that empower caregivers and communities to adopt healthy behaviours for young children to grow up in safe and caring environments, for them to thrive, and disrupt the intergenerational cyclers of trauma and poverty. She holds a Master’s in Public Health from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her Master’s research was exploring the breastfeeding experiences of mothers to better understand their challenges and facilitators at individual level, family/interpersonal as well as at structural/policy level. She shares valuable lessons from her research as the country explores various strategies to increase the exclusive breastfeeding rates.
