James van Duuren is a young medical graduate from the University of Cape Town. He set himself down the long trail to becoming a doctor so as to best be able to provide for the needs of South Africa. James hopes to serve as a catalyst for social change through the establishment of firm Primary Health Care systems that are accessible and affordable to disenfranchised communities. James has held numerous leadership roles during his student career. As a volunteer for SHAWCO, SA’s largest student-led social development and outreach organisation with historic ties to UCT and greater Cape Town, he has been responsible for running primary-care clinics serving thousands of patients every year. James has held roles from the Head of Paediatrics to the Health Sector Vice-President and President. At SHAWCO, James and his team were awarded the UCT Student Team of the Year Award at the 2018 UCT Student Leadership Awards and he received the UCT individual award for Outstanding Social Responsiveness.
He has also held positions on the UCT Surgical Society and UCT Cardiac Society and served as Co-Chair of the Childsafe Student Initiative. He is the newly appointed Chairperson of the Junior Public Health Association of South Africa – a forum he hopes to grow and develop into a hub for constructive conversation and problem solving. He is also an alumni of the South Africa-Washington International Program.
James will pursue a career in public health, helping to bridge the divides of inequitable healthcare globally. He is passionate about the potential for supporting local African solutions to the continent’s healthcare challenges.”
