Masters in Development Finance

Jonathan Ruwanika is completing his training as a Chartered Accountant. In 2019, Jonathan passed his last qualifying exam and will be duly certified by the South African institute of Chartered Accountants at the beginning of 2020.

He is passionate about the financing of large-scale infrastructure projects in high-risk African countries and how project finance can be used as a tool to de-risk these projects while creating an environment that increases private sector participation.

As a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, Jonathan’s thesis focused on how Zimbabwean independent power producers can improve financial closure of energy infrastructure projects. He holds an honours degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of the Free State.

At his alma mater, Jonathan sat in the Student Representative Council as the Chair of the academic council. In 2015, the University of the Free State bestowed him with a Life Time Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in all spheres of student governance. Jonathan represented the University of the Free State at the McKinsey sponsored South African national debate championships in 2016 where he reached the National English first language semi-finals.

Abroad, Jonathan has been selected to attend the International youth leadership summit in Dubai (2014), the Global leadership tour in Poland and Germany (2015) and the South American business forum in Argentina (2015). Jonathan won the Deloitte Suit-Up South Africa challenge in 2015 and was elected as a future leader by the South African institute of chartered accountants in 2013 and 2014.
