Lindokuhle Shongwe

South Africa & University of Cape Town, 2018

Degree of study:
Masters in Electrical Engineering

Lindokuhle Shongwe is an aspiring entrepreneur and engineer.

Engineering is his first love. Lindokuhle’s focus is the design and implementation of autonomous control system for a power line inspection robot. The goal is to reduce the cost of power line inspection, increase the reliability of the electrical transmission networks and reduce the occupational hazard to people working on maintenance of power lines.

Lindokuhle is passionate about improving education in Africa. In 2016, he co-founded a social enterprise, PlugEd. Their mission is to make high-quality online educational materials accessible offline to students in under-resourced schools and communities throughout South Africa. They do this by loading resources onto a low-cost computer which broadcasts a local WiFi access point. Students can then access the content without incurring any data costs by connecting to the WiFi access point.

Lindokuhle is currently the Chairperson of the IEEE Young Professionals Affinity group for South Africa.  His mandate is to bridge the gap between the industry and students in university. Formerly, he was the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Cape Town. Their committee pioneered the first IEEE Hackathon at UCT which brought together high school and university students alike to share knowledge and collaborate on an electronics project.

Above all else, Lindokuhle is an African, and he intends to contribute to the betterment of the continent and the upliftment of its people using technology and social entrepreneurship.
