Mikaela Oosthuizen holds a Cum Laude degree in BA Media, Communications and Culture, as well as an Honours in Corporate Communication. She was a Vice Chancellor’s Scholar at the Nelson Mandela University.
Her current Masters research focuses on analysing the embedded messages evident in South African grocery retailer campaigns that stimulate a culture of collecting in consumers. Her innate curiosity and love for communication as a unifying force has driven her years of work within the radio and television presenting space, as well as the magazine and adverting industry in which she now practices as a consultant.
Mikaela is actively involved with the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa and founded the BWA Student Chapter in Port Elizabeth which won the “Best New Society of the Year” at the 2018 Nelson Mandela University Merit Awards under her direction. With a passion for equipping young women to not just survive, but thrive, as they make the transition from the academic space to the working world, she has presented talks which offer practical advice on how female students can make and save money independent of romantic relationships.
As a Miss South Africa 2016 finalist, Mikaela has used her work in the fashion and media industry as a platform to critically analyse women’s position in society in terms of traditional standards of beauty, accepted gender roles and power relations. As a result she acts as a thought leader for various news publications, often creating content to challenge, or respond to, issues affecting women. As a TED x speaker her talk “A Feminist War Cry: How to Win Back Territory in the Gym, Create Allies within our Relationships and Unite Our Troops” was received with wide acclaim.
