Nosipho Gumede

South Africa & University of the Witwatersrand, 2019

Degree of study:
MSc in Industrial Engineering

Nosipho Gumede grew up just outside of Durban and moved to Johannesburg in 2010 to realise her dreams of becoming an Extractive Metallurgical Engineer. She obtained a BSc in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013. She did this whilst co-founding the Poetry Society at Wits, winning a National Poetry Competition (hosted by Wits Drama For Life) and making it to the Dean’s List. Following that, she started working as a Graduate Metallurgist at an Anglo American thermal coal mine in 2014. She completed a graduate training programme that required her to first solve problems at the lowest level as an operator. After completing this programme, she was appointed as a Senior Plant Metallurgist. Nosipho is currently working as a Senior Plant Metallurgist and completing an MSc in Industrial Engineering as a part-time student at Wits University. She applies engineering principles to solve problems and is a supervisor to graduates who are completing their training programmes. After 5 years in mining, she will leave this industry to continue her MSc as a full-time student and a Mandela Rhodes Scholar in 2019. This is driven by her belief that the engineering problem-solving approach can and should be applied to other sectors such as health, education and other service industries for the betterment of society.
