Tafadzwa Kwaramba

Zimbabwe & University of Cape Town, 2018

Degree of study:
Masters in Mathematical Finance

Tafadzwa Kwaramba is a Chemical Engineering Honours graduate from the University of Cape Town. He completed his A’ levels at St. John’s College in Harare, Zimbabwe. Despite studying Engineering, Tafadzwa is a believer in cross-disciplinary learning and is passionate about economics, monetary policy and their intersection with politics and governance.

Apart from the academics, Tafadzwa was heavily involved in student affairs as he served as the Secretary-General of the Engineering and Built Environment Students Council and served as a students’ representative in the Undergraduate Academic Programmes committee in 2016. As part of the faculty student leadership during this year, the council managed to create and stimulate conversations around the creation of making Engineering buildings and environments more inclusive spaces across gender and disabilities.

Tafadzwa has been actively involved in trying to bring Zimbabwean students based in South Africa together under one umbrella body to speak with one voice. He was intimately involved with talking to and lobbying the South African Home Affairs department to expedite study permit processing for students for the 2019 academic year which resulted in over 2000 students getting study permits and being able to arrive in time for the commencement of lectures. In the aftermath of cyclone Idai, he was part of a leadership group that managed to coordinate and mobilise to raise clothing donations across UCT residences for donations to victims of the cataleptic crises precipitated by the cyclone.

Beyond the more serious endeavours, Tafadzwa is a good footballer and plays for UCT 1st team. He is guided by the mantra “Love your neighbour as yourself.”- Galatians 5 vs 14
